Filmmaker, script editor, producer, literary translator, and more, I've worn many hats in my life and treasured all the opportunities that have come my way, or that I myself have created. Perhaps none is more fulfilling than my latest role as Indie Author: writing, editing and self-publishing my first novel, The Gold Dark Summer. |

I grew up in the rural countryside of southern England, free to roam the fields and woods and travel far afield on my bicycle. I attended village schools that boasted one or at most two teachers, passed my 11-plus exam and won a scholarship to boarding school. I'd written creatively on my own account since I was very young, poetry and unfinished novels, but after meeting my future husband and partner, Michael Papas, I became totally immersed in film-making, learning the whole process, creative, technical and business, from the ground up, and collaborated on all his films. In recent years, since moving from London to Cyprus, I've enjoyed a new career as a literary translator (Greek to English) of novels, short stories, poetry and essays, working closely with authors and organisations such as the EU and PEN Cyprus. And I began to think seriously about publishing the novel I'd been writing on and off over the years, originally as a screenplay, then "from the inside" as a novel. A fiction author is director, scriptwriter, dialogue writer, production designer, art director, casting director and editor, every activity of film-making rolled into one make-or-break occupation! As an Indie Author one is obliged to become one's own designer, publisher and publicist, too. The up-side is the control one retains over one's own creation, the downside is the constant struggle to make one's book stand out from the crowd. THE GOLD DARK SUMMER is a coming-of-age story set in an English boarding school in the summer of 1959. Although the main character is a fourteen-year-old girl, Sadie, this novel appeals to all ages as well as teenagers. Now I'm writing a second novel while continuing work I love as a literary translator. |
